A network model of channel competition in fracture dissolution

چکیده
[1] During dissolution in porous or fractured rock, a positive feedback between fluid transport and chemical reactions at the mineral surfaces may lead to the formation of pronounced, wormhole-like channels. As the dissolution proceeds the channels interact, competing for the available flow, and eventually the growth of the shorter ones ceases. Thus the number of channels decreases with time while the characteristic distance between them increases, which leads to a scale-invariant, power-law distribution of channel lengths. A simple resistor network model of the evolution of dissolving channels is constructed and its properties studied. The results are compared with pore-scale simulations of fracture dissolution using a microscopic, three-dimensional numerical model. Despite its simplicity, the resistor model is found to retain the essential features of the nonlinear interaction between the channels. Citation: Szymczak, P., and A. J. C. Developing a 3D stochastic discrete fracture network model for hydraulic analyses
Fluid flow in jointed rock mass with impermeable matrix is often controlled by joint properties, including aperture, orientation, spacing, persistence and etc. On the other hand, since the rock mass is made of heterogeneous and anisotropic natural materials, geometric properties of joints may have dispersed values. One of the most powerful methods for simulation of stochastic nature of geometri...
متن کاملCompetition Among Flow, Dissolution, and Precipitation in Porous Media
A theoretical and experimental study has been carried out on flow, dissolution, and precipitation in porous media. Flow experiments were performed on linear carbonate cores using acidic ferric chloride solutions. Dissolution of the carbonate by the acid causes an increase in the solution pH, thereby precipitating ferric hydroxide. This precipitate plugs up the pore throats in the medium and inc...
متن کاملConsidering chain to chain competition in forward and reverse logistics of a dynamic and integrated supply chain network design problem
In this paper, a bi-objective model is presented for dynamic and integrated network design of a new entrant competitive closed-loop supply chain. To consider dynamism and integration in the network design problem, multiple long-term periods are regarded during planning horizon, so that each long-term period includes several short-term periods. Furthermore, a chain to chain competition between t...
متن کاملA fully-coupled hydrological–mechanical–chemical model for fracture sealing and preferential opening
A fully coupled hydrological–mechanical–chemical (HMC) model is developed and applied to explain enigmatic spontaneous changes in permeability that develop within a fracture in limestone under simulated in situ conditions (Water Resour Res 2004;40:W03502). The water flow-through test was concurrently monitored for water and dissolved mineral mass efflux and periodically imaged by X-ray CT to pr...
متن کاملA model of brand competition for durable goods supply chains in a dynamic framework
Game theory is an efficient tool to represent and conceptualize the problems concerning conflict and competition. In recent years and especially for durable products, competition between domestic and foreign brands for gaining market share has received a considerable attention. This paper study electronic commerce concepts by differential game theory and introduce a novel and comprehensive mode...
